Medical Acupuncture Program (MAP)

The Medical Acupuncture Program, developed by the University of Alberta, is one of the few university academic-based medical acupuncture training programs in North America. The 21st year of the program is set to begin in September of 2011.

Description

The Medical Acupuncture Program (MAP) involves over 200 credit hours of intensive graduate-level instruction in Traditional Chinese Medicine theory and clinical practices as it relates to medical acupuncture and modern biomedicine. Instruction is provided through lectures, workshops, demonstrations, clinical practice, and examinations. The program is designed to be taken on a part-time basis and to be completed in nine months. It is presented in four modules (levels), each worth 50 credit hours. Each module consists of two 3-day weekend sessions, (Friday through Sunday) held approximately one month apart.

Course Objectives

  • To understand and develop the skills to integrate and apply the philosophy, concepts, principles, and clinical practices of acupuncture therapy to conventional health care practices.
  • To enhance the practices of health care professionals with the knowledge and application of evidence-based medicine, health law and ethics relevant to Integrative Medicine.
  • To contribute to the improvement and standardization of professional acupuncture training and practice.

Program Curriculum

 
The program is designed to provide a stringent, controlled, structured scientific program of study. Discover and develop new ideas and perspectives on issues, problems, and opportunities in health and patient care, network with colleagues who share similar interests and concerns and learn about useful reference materials. 
 
The program consists of four levels and a Final Comprehensive Exam.
